    Emil Nolde is an iconic figure of German modernism, and the only artist included in the Nazi propaganda exhibition "Degenerate Art" of 1937 who was a paid-up member of the Nazi party. After 1945, he was turned into the personification of the persecuted modern artist, a narrative popularized in Siegfried Lenz's world-bestseller of 1968, Die Deutschstunde.  This project is the first to make use of the artist's papers in the private Nolde Foundation, to reconstruct his attitude to Nazism, combining this with an analysis of the construction of his artistic "genius" post-1945 which ignored his Nazi past.
