And it was in turmoil. In December 1895 the KKK’s Supreme Assembly had decided at a meeting in Caloocan that 46 individuals should be “separated” or “distanced” from the society, and that many others would also be cast out unless they showed more commitment. At least a sixth of the active membership, and perhaps as much as a third, were expelled. Many of the expellees, moreover, had at one time or another belonged to the society’s inner core.2 Several were not just expelled, they were branded as “taksil” (traitors). The photographs of 14 of them were glued to this sheet of paper, which was mounted in a special frame or box (lalagian) and displayed by Bonifacio at the Supreme Assembly’s next meeting.3 The alleged misdemeanors of each individual “traitor” and expellee are not known.
