Surrey councillor Barinder Rasode works to end domestic abuse cycle with conference
First-term Surrey First councillor Barinder Rasode says she is still amazed how effective antibullying campaigns have been at raising awareness of the pernicious nature of bullying and its effects on kids.
Now Rasode, who is running for reelection on November 19, said the same seismic shift in awareness can happen with domestic abuse, especially when children are forced to witness abuse in their own homes.
That’s why Rasode helped organize the upcoming one-day Making a Positive Change: Breaking the Cycle of Violence for Children and Youth conference on November 8 at the Surrey campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
“In anybody’s life, the safest place in your life should be your home,” Rasode told the Straight by phone. “And I can’t imagine a senior or a woman or a child, anyone, being in a home where they don’t feel safe. So how you are supposed to be a contributing member to the rest of your life? I just don’t understand how that’s supposed to happen.”
In June 2009, Rasode invited over 60 professionals from various agencies to engage in dialogue on the issue of domestic violence. In February 2010, this led to the creation of the Surrey Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, or SCADA.
