Our evening begins at 5 pm with an art + cocktail reception — featuring live jazz, hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, and a trio of plein air painters creating original work to be auctioned at the end of the evening. During the reception, our Curator, Maria Ferguson, will lead tours of our new exhibition, Art that Matters to the Planet: Interconnectivity. You’ll also have the opportunity to bid on several signed and numbered prints by Roger Tory Peterson.
Under the tent on the back courtyard at RTPI, we’ll enjoy a gourmet dinner buffet provided Elegant Edibles.
After dinner, we’ll relax with coffee and dessert as our CEO shares exciting updates about RTPI, followed by a brief program by our guest speaker, Jennifer Lodi-Smith, Professor of Psychology and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at Canisius College. She’ll be sharing a little bit about The Spark Bird Project. Co-sponsored by RTPI, “The Spark Bird Project is designed to gather and share the stories of people’s passion for birds while gaining scientific insights into a critical missing piece in the understanding of the ecology of birds – birders themselves.”

Home to the largest collection of Roger Tory Peterson’s original artwork, films, slides and papers, the Roger Tory Peterson Institute (RTPI) hosts three major nature art exhibitions each year. The museum’s signature annual exhibition is Art that Matters to the Planet. Each year, the theme of the exhibition draws inspiration from one of more than 50 titles in the Peterson Field Guide series.
Peterson, the premier artist-naturalist of his time, connected people with nature as never before. The father of the modern field guide, he was honored by the Smithsonian Institution and received a Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Jimmy Carter. Peterson devoted his career not only to art, but also to helping to heal the natural world. Peterson’s artwork offered a way for readers to discover the beauty and wonder of nature. He also helped us to understand the impact of human activity on nature.
RTPI honors Peterson’s legacy through art exhibitions that encourage viewers to look more closely at nature, so that they might better appreciate it. And like Peterson, many of today’s artists help us explore new ways to engage in the beauty of the natural world. Learn about current exhibitions.
