The smile is the same as it ever was. Wide and welcoming.
So much about O.J. Brigance has changed since he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in May 2007. So much of his physical appearance — the muscular, powerful body that carried him to prominence on the football field — has been whittled away by a relentless disease.
His legs no longer get him from place-to-place. A motorized wheelchair serves that function. His hands no longer rise from his sides. His voice is gone, leaving him to communicate through an eye-gaze computer device. He blinks to form words and sentences that the computer relays.
But the smile.
The smile is unmistakable. As he prepares to celebrate his 50th birthday Sunday — a milestone, he was told that he would not reach — it remains irrepressible.
“I am no longer a spring chicken,” Brigance said last week, eliciting laughter from those in his office at the Ravens team facility.
