TAVARES — When police arrived at the home of Carl Lange and found his longtime companion dead and the 88-year-old writing a suicide note, they speculated that it was a suicide pact.

Now, police question whether Rosemary Getz, 89, even knew about the plan.
Newly released documents detail how Lange told authorities Getz had cancer and was napping when he shot her three times in the head. Before that, he turned the gun on their 5-pound terrier, Goldylocks, and killed her, too. He told investigators this had long been his plan, but Getz didn't believe in suicide because of her Catholic faith, records show.
Police originally said that Lange admitted killing Getz as part of a pact, and they booked him on a second-degree murder charge. As the investigation unfolded, details didn't point toward such an arrangement.
“Everyone we've talked to said she was in good health,” Tavares police Detective Paul Harvey said. “If she didn't believe in suicide as part of her religion, why would she have agreed to this plan or allowed someone else to do it?”
