“Nobody has captured, documented and preserved the Istanbul of the Fifties and Sixties, with its streets, pavements, shops, its run-down factories, its ships, horse-drawn carriages, busses, clouds, taxis, houses, bridges, chimneys, billows of smoke, people and its non-descript atmosphere, as well as Ara Güler,” who “photographs not only the visual elements of Istanbul’s streets, but their soul,” as Orhan Pamuk writes in the coffee-table book in which the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Magnum photographer touchingly pay joint homage to their hometown.
As the title image they chose the present photograph, which reflects the legendary Istanbul feeling of “hüzün”, a kind of melancholy, particularly well. The two dark figures in their boats, the glittering water, the famous mosques and the Galata Bridge in the distance, out of focus, shrouded by fog. (+)

Frank Horvat (* 1928 in Abbazia, today Opatija, Croatia), a fashion photographer from the very beginning and one of the first professional photographers to use Photoshop, can now look back on around 70 years of activity and a dazzling career. Now the grand seigneur grants a very personal insight into his private life: the autobiography in pictures shows private moments from all phases of his life. We encounter the big issues of humanity such as birth and death, witness his ability to play and deal with animals, see his family and friends. They are images of everyday life as any person could have collected in an album. One ‘small’ difference, however, cannot be overlooked: a master was at work here from an early age, the quality of the pictures speaks for itself. Each of the photos, which appear in chronological order, is annexed by Horvat himself and is usually extensively commented on.
